Florence Family Guide

Everything you need to know about visiting Florence with kids

Florence is a magical city for children - if you know how to approach it. This guide, written by Amelie Tupponi who lived in Florence for several years and taught there, shares her best tips for a successful family visit.

5 essential tips

1

Let the kids lead

The secret to a great visit: give children an active role. The Adventures of Elba treasure hunt is designed for this. Kids search, observe, and solve puzzles. Parents follow and enjoy.

2

Skip the queues

The Uffizi and the David attract huge lines. Book online in advance, or choose off-peak times (opening time in the morning, weekdays). Many museums are free for children under 6.

3

Eat like locals

Avoid restaurants facing monuments - they're expensive and rarely good. Walk two streets away and you'll find authentic trattorias at reasonable prices.

4

Plan for breaks

Florence is a walking city. With kids, plan regular breaks. The Boboli Gardens, Cascine Park, or simply a piazza with a gelato are great options.

5

Wear comfortable shoes

Florence's cobblestone streets are beautiful but tiring. Comfortable shoes are essential for the whole family. A baby carrier is often more practical than a stroller on the cobblestones.

Best neighborhoods for families

Centro Storico

The historic heart, largely pedestrianized. This is where Elba's treasure hunt takes place. The Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio - everything is within walking distance.

Oltrarno

On the other side of the Arno, this is Florence's most authentic neighborhood. Less touristy, more relaxed. Good trattorias, artisan workshops, and the magnificent Boboli Gardens.

San Lorenzo

The central market neighborhood. Kids love the covered market (first floor: food court with everything). The area is lively and popular.

Kid-friendly museums

Florence isn't just Renaissance paintings. Here are the museums that work best with children:

Palazzo Vecchio

The most kid-friendly. They offer specific guided tours for families with secret routes through hidden passages in the palace.

Museo Galileo

Scientific instruments, globes, telescopes. Children are fascinated by the interactive exhibits and demonstrations.

Museo Stibbert

An incredible collection of armor. Kids love it. Slightly outside the center but worth the trip, with a beautiful park around it.

Practical info

  • Most museums are free for children under 18 (EU citizens) or under 6 (all nationalities).
  • Bus 13 goes up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the panoramic view - a must for families.
  • Public fountains (nasoni) are everywhere in the center. The water is drinkable and free - bring water bottles.
  • In summer, visit monuments in the morning (before 10am) and save afternoons for gelati and gardens.
